Three village temples comprise the Balinese desa or village. These temples include pura desa, pura puseh, and pura dalem. Found at the middle of desa, the Pura Desa or the village temple is associated with Dewa Brahma their creator and used to worship the deities guarding the welfare of the village. The Pura Puseh located at the upstream end of the villages built to honor God Wisnu, “the sustainer of life or preserver”. Lastly, the Pura Dalem is located at the downstream end or kelod of villages where burial takes place. It is associated with Dewa Siwa, “the destroyer”, who is believed to purify negativity in the world. Pura dalem was built to honor the cremated dead. All three territorial temples comprise kahyangan tiga.
Upon entering the Balinese temples, one may observe its three major divisions. A split gate or the Candi Bentar leads to the first courtyard. The second division follows upon passing the towering gates consisting of several faces of demons. Inside are various pavilions used for specific purposes. The final division one may discover the meru pagoda which can have as many as eleven roofs if the temple owner is a significant person. These temples are enclosed by walls and meticulously designed to venerate ancestors and give thanks for their prosperity.
